This is similiar to the mathematical italic letters, where 𝑓 and 𝑥 have very special appearances depending on the used font, 𝑓(𝑥) (function of x) is a very common character sequence in mathematical context. For some reason 𝓵 (U+1D4F5) and ℓ (U+2113) are different characters, because the latter is also used for the unit litre.
