And it's easy to figure out that they use U+2297 CIRCLED TIMES for this 
purpose, and seem to be happy with it.

The entry for U+2297 also gives various alternatives:

2297 ⊗ CIRCLED TIMES
= tensor product
= vector pointing into page
→ 26D2 ⛒  circled crossing lanes
→ 2A02 ⨂  n-ary circled times operator
→ 2BBE ⮾  circled x
⁓ 2297 FE00 ⊗  with white rim

Not sure we need yet another character that looks almost the same. But 
maybe adding a comment such as
= Spanish bolaspa
might help.
